Fats, Oils & Grease (FOG)

Fats, oils and grease (FOG) can cause the sewer lines in homes and streets to back up if they are not disposed of properly, FOG items can be found in food ingredients such as:

  • Baked goods
  • Butter
  • Cooking oil
  • Dairy product
  • Margarine
  • Meat
  • Sauces
  • Shortening

Other Pipe Clogging Items

Scrape these into the trash and contain liquids to avoid trash spills:

  • Batter
  • Chicken stock
  • Dough
  • Gravy
  • Ice cream
  • Icing
  • Salsa and sour cream
  • Sauces

Expensive Repairs

FOG that is poured down the sink drain will cling to the insides of pipes and the sewer system, and over time can build up and block pipes completely. If wastewater can’t move freely through pipes and out into the sewer system, it can back up into your home and can cause unsanitary conditions and damages that can be expensive to repair.

Citizen Concern

Pouring fats, oils and grease down the drain may clog your pipes and back up sewage lines. Sewage backups can damage personal property, and that can be expensive for the homeowner.

Impacting the Pipes

There are several ways to dispose of fats, oils and grease that won’t impact the pipes in your home, the sewer lines or the environment.

Let fats, oils and grease cool to room temperature in pots and pans. Then pour it in a container and throw the container away in the trash.

Before you wash pots and pans, wipe the fats, oil and grease with a paper towel and toss it into the trash.
